3 Causes of Roof Leaks That Everyone Should Know

Know what can cause roof leaks to your home so you know how to stop them.

If you’ve ever lived through a roof leak, you know the havoc it can wreak on your house. It can cause mold problems inside your walls, damage your electrical wiring, or even weaken the structural integrity of the home. It’s best to stop roof leaks before they stop, but to do that, you have to know what can cause roof leaks. Here are some of the most common causes that homeowners should be aware of.

Broken Shingles or Flashing

Broken shingles and broken flashing are very common causes of roof leaks, but they’re also some of the easiest issues to spot. You can see broken or missing shingles from the ground, and by checking the flashing on your roof, you can easily see if it’s come loose. It’s also easy to understand how this can cause roof leaks. If shingles break off or flashing comes loose, it leaves more space through which water can and will slip through and travel along your ceiling and walls.

Attic Ceiling Condensation

If your home isn’t well insulated, you can develop condensation — in which the heat from inside meets with the cold air from outside on the walls or ceiling, causing the surface to become damp. The attic is especially vulnerable to this problem, which can cause mold and mildew or simply weaken the structure of the wall or ceiling. If your attic has condensation issues, it’s that much easier for water to wear it down and cause leaks.

Sometimes your roof has simply aged out of its usefulness. Few roofs are built to last forever, though some — such as metal roofs — will last for far longer than other roofing materials. Over time, the roof can become worn down and brittle, which makes it easier for heavy storms to break through the surface and cause leaks. Take a look at the expected lifespan for the type of roof you have. If you’re approaching that time frame and you’re worried about leaks, it may be time for a roof replacement.
