What to Do in a Roofing Disaster or Emergency

Sometimes you don’t realize how important it is to have a good roof over your head until something happens to threaten that roof. Whether it’s vandalism or an “act of God” like a hurricane or violent storm, roofing disasters can feel overwhelming. All you want is to fix your roof and regain that sense of security to your home, but all the paperwork, phone and email tag, and talk of finances can easily cause stress to build up.

Remember to stay calm. You have the resources to have your roof fixed and to do so within your budget. Here are some steps for actions to take in light of a roofing disaster.

Assess the Damage

The first thing to do is to assess the damage. It’s important to get a clear picture of exactly how much your roof was damaged and to have pictures of the damage to present to the insurance company. It can be dangerous to assess the damage yourself, because often it involves climbing onto the roof. Take pictures from the ground or even from the perch of a ladder, but if you don’t feel comfortable with the rest, make sure to call a roofing contractor to assess the damage for you.

Check Your Insurance Policy (and Your Warranty)

Once you have the assessment of the damage, it’s time to check your insurance company to see how much you’re covered. A good homeowners insurance plan will cover the cost of a roof replacement, especially if your roof is less than 10 years old. If older, they may only cover the worth of the roof minus the wear and tear that the roof has built up over the years. If the roof is 20 years old, you may not be covered for as much as you need, but it is a good time to check the warranty you received for the installation of the roof.

Once you have the finances taken care of, you can set about having a new roof installed.

Choose a Reliable Roofer

A reliable roofer will be able to replace your roof in a timely fashion, preferably with a roof that will last for as long as possible. Especially in the wake of a roofing disaster, discuss different roofing materials and their durability so as to determine what the best investment is for your home. But even the best roof means little without a good installation crew, so make sure you opt for a roofer with a history of reputable work, someone you can trust with your home.
