The Right Roofing Material For You

The roof is - by far - one of the most important aspects of any home. A roof not only protects your home from the elements, it can also help keep the energy costs down, which is an essential consideration for your Ft. Myers home. While consistent roof inspections can help prolong the life of your roof, the time will probably come when you will have to replace it.

Even though replacing your roof could seem like a burden, it is also a great opportunity to change the type of roofing material your home uses. Since most roofing material lasts at least 15 years, any material you will choose will undoubtedly be an improvement on what your roof used to be. As roofing technology has advanced considerably in the past few years, you may want to take a look at some new roofing materials that you may not have previously considered.

Clay Tiles

Clay tiles are one of the best roofing materials you can choose for your Ft. Myer’s home. Because of their lighter color, clay tiles tend to retain less heat than darker-colored roofs, which can significantly reduce your cooling costs. Additionally, the vaulted style of the tiles offers air circulation, allowing the hot air to escape more easily and not be absorbed by the roof.

Clay tiles roofs are also extremely durable. Due to their material, they will naturally not burn or rot, and they are resistant to insect damage. They also are relatively easy to replace, should one or two of the tiles crack due to storm damage. However, clay tiles are heavy, so all houses may not be able to support this style of roof without additional work. Additionally, clay tiles are on the more expensive side. Due to their longevity, the initial cost more than pays for itself over time.

Metal Roofs

Metal roofs are by far the most energy-efficient roof you can purchase. Perhaps contrary to what you may believe, a metal roof will keep your home the coolest, as the material reflects sunlight and the heat, instead of absorbing it. Additionally, most metal roofs are made from recycled material and are lightweight, meaning they can be installed over an existing roof. They are also quite versatile, being able to resemble any other roofing type fairly easily.

Although metal roofs will cost about 50% more than other roofing types, it will offer a great return of investment in the long run. Not only will a metal roof greatly reduce your energy costs, it also requires significantly less maintenance and will last longer than other - less expensive - roofing materials, guaranteed for at least 50 years, and up to perhaps 100.

Laminated Fiberglass

If you need something that is a little more budget-friendly, laminated fiberglass shingles are the best choice. They are durable and offer fire protection, but they are not as good as other roofing materials at protecting your home from the heat. However, they come in many different colors, and don’t require a lot of maintenance.
